Early Intervention or ‘Interceptive’ Treatment
Early diagnosis and treatment in certain cases can help prevent more complicated orthodontic issues from developing. Not every problem can or needs to be resolved early but timely intervention in the right circumstances can simplify, or potentially even prevent, further treatment later on.
Early intervention includes but is not limited to:
- Habit cessation to help prevent or minimise the effect habits, such as thumb sucking, can have on the developing dentition and jaw bones.
- Extraction of deciduous (‘baby’) teeth to help guide eruption of the permanent adult teeth.
- Holding arches/space maintainers when deciduous teeth are lost too soon and space needs to be maintained for the permanent teeth to erupt in to.
- Expansion appliances to correct crossbites that may contribute to functional jaw issues and uneven wear of teeth.
- Headgear appliances that aim to capture and utilise the patient’s own growth potential to correct a developing malocclusion.
At Central Victorian Orthodontics, we are willing to see a patient for an assessment as soon as the parent/guardian or referring dentist identifies a potential problem.
