Dr Bethany Cunning

BHScD, MDent(LTU), DCD(Melb), AOB Cert
ORTHODONTIST

Bethany grew up on a cereal farm in the Mallee of Northern Victoria, which instilled in her a very down to earth nature and practical attitude towards life. She moved to Bendigo with her family in 2005 and completed high school at Girton Grammar, where she was awarded equal Dux at the end of year 12.

She was accepted and completed her dentistry degree at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus and very much valued the ability to study locally. On completion of her degree, she was awarded the RACDS award for high academic achievement in her final year, as well as the ADAVB La Trobe Dental School award for the highest weighted average mark across the entire course of the 2014 graduating cohort.

Bethany was offered an associate position at a local private dental practice where she stayed and enjoyed working for 3 years before being accepted to specialise in orthodontics at The University of Melbourne.

Orthodontic Qualifications & Experience

During her post-graduate studies, Bethany was taught the latest in orthodontic treatment and research and spent time working at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Patients in these facilities must meet a certain level of severity to qualify for treatment, which often results in cases being very complex and challenging. Such cases typically require interdisciplinary management resulting in close working relationships with oral and maxillofacial surgeons and other dental specialists.

Bethany undertook a prospective clinical trial comparing the survival of two different retainer materials as part of her post-graduate thesis. She presented on the topic at the meeting of the Australasian Begg Society of Orthodontists in Darwin in July 2019 and was awarded the Elsdon Storey Research Merit Award for her work in 2021.

She has lectured at the University of Melbourne to undergraduate dental students and post-graduate paediatric specialists. Bethany completed her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orth) degree with first class honours and achieved certification with the Australasian Orthodontic Board.

Central Victorian Orthodontics

She has since returned to Bendigo and set up her specialist orthodontic practice, Central Victorian Orthodontics. Being able to transform patients’ smiles and see their self-confidence grow is what she finds most rewarding and exciting about her specialty!
In her spare time, Bethany enjoys being with her husband, Callum, and extended family either camping, water skiing or tripping through outback Australia. She has two dogs, Nala and Indi, who are great dane x bull mastiff and take a lot of feeding. She would love to get back into netball but worries damage to her fingers will prevent her from straightening teeth. And in more recent years she has a newfound role as ‘Aunty Beth’ to her nieces and nephews, which she is loving!
